Gymming culture catching up in Coimbatore:

The gymming culture is catching up among fitness enthusiasts in the city

There was a time when an average person would hit the gym only if found himself pot-bellied or obese. But today, the gymming scene in the city has changed and how. An average Coimbatorean has started pumping iron just to flex his muscles and show off his chiseled abs. Women are not behind either. Not only do they sweat it out at the gym to enhance their visual appeal but also to relieve stress.

Fitness trainer Nithyanandhini Manoharan discloses that it's in the last 2-3 years that the city has undergone a sea change. "There has been a 50-60 per cent increase in the number of people hitting the gyms. Moreover, fitness enthusiasts are no longer restricted to the regular cardio workouts, treadmill, upper body and lower body workouts. They are willing to explore options like Masala Bhangra, Zumba, Pilates and Aerobics. Gymming with music is the in thing now," she says.

G Nandini, a fitness instructor says that her clientele ranges from people of all age groups. "The age group ranges from 17 to 70. A lot of college students, who were hitherto reluctant to hit the gym are coming to us. We explain the pros and cons of a particular workout before they sign up for a fitness regime. It's impressive to see people taking their workouts with utmost seriousness. They do not miss it at any cost."

Vinod S, a fitness freak says that a majority of the youngsters look at enhancing their visual appeal by these workouts. "Every time a film in which the lead actor shows off his bulging biceps hits the screens, you will see a spurt in the number of people visiting the gym. Actors play an important role in luring people to fitness centres. Gyms also act as socializing hubs as you get to meet people from various fields. Being part of a gym not only helps in your personality development but also in meeting new people."

It's not only the youngsters who want to get a toned body but even families want every member to be fit. "Parents love to keep themselves in shape and they encourage their kids to be fit as well. I have seen children below 18 years getting the enrolment form signed by their parents. Youngsters prefer group workouts, while the older people go for solo gymming. I have even noticed mothers and daughters coming together to gym and discuss fitness strategies," says Nithyanandhini.

Srilekha Reddy, co-founder of a fitness chain, says that cities like Coimbatore are the new boulevards for fitness centres. "We have seen an increased exposure among people in tier II cities like Coimbatore. Since a majority of the people here travel abroad, they expect the same facilities they had overseas when they come back home. Cities like Coimbatore, Karur and Vellore are virgin markets and that aspect definitely gives us an advantage.

Though the players are growing gradually, the number of people visiting the gyms is also increasing. The demand is still more than the supply."
